A total of 160 arrests were made during yet another weekend operation throughout the West Rand District.
The operation was held from Friday, 9 October to Sunday, 11 October.
According to Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, the West Rand District and Randfontein Police spokesperson, police in the District continued enforcing its vision and mission to create a safe and secure environment for the inhabitants of the West Rand District and their property, by preventing anything that may threaten the safety or security of any community and ensure that criminals are brought to justice and participate in efforts to address the causes of crimes.
Hendricks said the operations focused on crime prevention, rural safety, roadblocks, stops and searches for drugs and illegal firearms, and compliance with the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002 regulations.
The operations yielded the following arrests:
• Two for murder
• Two for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition
• One for common robbery
• One for rape
• One for rape and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm
• 24 for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm
• Four for common assault
• One for fraud
• Five for theft
Those arrested were linked to a variety of crimes ranging from possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, domestic violence related cases, contravention of protection order, dealing in dagga, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of drugs, possession of dagga, possession of substance suspected to be drugs, possession of dangerous weapon, possession of gold-bearing material, drunken driving, illegal mining, malicious damage to property, culpable homicide, possession of explosives, dealing in liquor, theft of motor vehicle, defeating the ends of justice and obstruction, business burglary and shoplifting.
“The National Crime Prevention Strategy represents a turning point in the battle against crime. This strategy is truly a South African product which is rooted in the reality of our society, for it to fully succeed it requires the support of all South Africans who no longer wish to be victims or to live in fear,” said Hendricks.
We therefore call upon our communities to participate in the fight against crime, and violence against women and children.”
All arrested suspects will appear in different magistrates’ courts in the District soon.
Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police Commissioner welcomed the successes for the weekend and thanked all South African Police Service and other law-enforcement agency members who made sure that their community is safe.
