Woman and 12-year-old raped in one weekend: Police declare war

'We have declared war on perpetrators of rape and any form of violence directed at women and children' – station commander following the rape of a minor and a woman over the weekend.

Kagiso Police have declared war against perpetrators of rape and any form of violence directed at women and children.

The warning came after another two rape incidents were reported during the weekend.

According to Captain Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso Police spokesperson, one incident involved a 30-year-old man who allegedly raped his ex-girlfriend without protection on Saturday, 10 October.

The victim told police that she was getting ready to go to bed at about 8pm when the perpetrator showed up unannounced.

He raped her repeatedly and further threatened to kill her if she screamed.”

The man then left and the victim reported the matter to the Kagiso Police who traced and apprehended the perpetrator hours later.

The second incident involved a 12-year-old girl from Tshepisong West (Ebumnandini) on Sunday, 11 October.

“The victim’s mother alleged that her daughter left on Friday, 9 October and never returned home. On 11 October, the mother decided to go search for her daughter and found one of her daughter’s friends who showed her where her daughter was. The mother found her 12-year-old daughter in a shack. She was informed that a 25-year-old had convinced her daughter to have sexual intercourse with him.”

The man was arrested that same day at his home and is facing charges of statutory rape.

Brigadier Themba Maduna, Kagiso Police station commander warned they will leave no stone unturned as they seek to bring those responsible to justice.

We have declared war on perpetrators of rape and any form of violence directed at women and children, and we won’t compromise.”

Captain Sibiya added, “Using any form of force or putting pressure on anyone, regardless of age to engage in a sexual activity is regarded as rape, which is a gross violation of human rights.”

He went on to say that gender-based violence – including sexual violence and rape – has long-term psychological effects on victims that might lead to suicide.

“Statutory rape is when an adult engages in a sexual activity with a minor. The law maintains that a minor can not make informed decisions about a sexual activity, including pornography or explicit sex.”
