The Kagiso Police are investigating a murder case following the death of a man who was assaulted by residents on 22 October at about 6am.
In a statement from Kagiso Police’s spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya, he said sector members received a call about an assault where sticks and stones had been used.
“On arrival at the crime scene at the corner of Themba Drive and Masedi Street, police found an injured man sitting on the ground and bleeding from multiple wounds. A group of residents was standing around and watching,” Sibiya said.
He added that an unknown female witness informed police that the man sitting on the ground had followed her and struck her with something on the back of her head from behind. When he was about to hit her again she screamed for help.
“The attacker noticed residents charging at him and he fled, but they gave chase and eventually apprehended him. He was assaulted with stones, sticks and booted feet until he was unconscious. The ambulance arrived and he was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. He died on arrival at the hospital.”
The Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna was concerned that some residents were still taking the law into their own hands.
“Assaulting a person to death does not correct or address anything, but can subject you to arrest and even life imprisonment. Someone must account for this murder like any other serious and violent crime,” he warned.
The police are appealing to anyone who knows the perpetrators to call the Kagiso Police on 011 696 9000, 011 696 9059, 011 696 9065, 011 696 9067 or the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111. You can also make use of the SMS line on 32211 or provide information via the My SAPS app and remain anonymous.
