Man suspected of fraud tries to bribe police and fails miserably

What started as a routine traffic stop-and-search quickly revealed a web of lies as a Hekpoort man tried to avoid arrest.

When a 37-year-old man was stopped by the Hekpoort Police recently, the stop-and-search went from bad to worse and he was eventually arrested.

Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye, Hekpoort Police spokesperson explained that while police were stopping and searching vehicles on 23 October, they stopped a white Nissan truck with a full load of grass at a vehicle control point on the R24.

They checked the vehicle and found that the driver was only using a certified copy of his passport, and that the information on the stamp was incorrect.

When asked about the signatures he gave the police money, saying they should not arrest him,” she added.

After trying to bribe the police, the man also failed to produce an invoice for the load he was carrying.

“And he did not know the name of the farm where he bought the grass,” she said.

The man was then placed under arrest while his money and truck were booked at the Hekpoort Police Station. He has been charged with fraud, bribery and possession of suspected stolen property.

Captain Kgomotso Manthata, the Hekpoort Police station commander, was very pleased with the police’s commitment and faithfulness.

She also asked the community to report any criminal activities on 014 576 9100 or use the Crime Stop number on 0800 10111.
