Gender-based violence ‘a second pandemic’ – Magalies Police

The Magaliesburg Police and other stakeholders recently spoke to the community about women and child abuse.

The Magaliesburg Police and other stakeholders recently hosted a 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse event.

The police, ward councillor Victor Molefe, Community Development, Victim Empowerment, Families South Africa (FAMSA), Women Against Women Abuse (WAWA), West Rand Youth Development, Mogale City Local Municipality’s Social Upliftment, and the Department of Health addressed the community on 27 November.

The community was taught and sensitised about gender-based violence (GBV) and how to report it to the different stakeholders if they are exposed to this second pandemic,” said Sergeant Rebecca Phithi.

The group also distributed pamphlets to community members, who had the opportunity to voice their own experiences around the issue.

“The community assured all the different stakeholders that they will report incidents, even if the next-door neighbours are affected,” Phiti said.

Captain Alex Mafhungo, the Magaliesburg Police acting station commander thanked all the stakeholders for their dedication and informing the community about gender-based violence.

He also encouraged the community to report any incidents to the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111 or use the SMS number on 32211. Alternatively, use of the My SAPS app.
