Krugersdorp storm: Food donations low as more victims come forward

The help from the community has been overwhelming following the floods of this past weekend but children will soon have to return to school and food stocks are running low.

Floods as a result of heavy rainfall in Krugersdorp over the first weekend of 2021 left many families with little to nothing.

As these families searched through the mud for their belongings to salvage what they could, organisations and community members jumped in to help where they could.

One of them is the Friends of Emergency Services who asked the community to donate what they could to those affected by the floods, and the response was overwhelming.

We are humbled after the terrible flooding in the Krugersdorp area. We have families who are absolutely traumatised; they have lost about everything,” the non-profit organisation said on their Facebook page.

The organisation got their wish as many community members, organisations and businesses donated. They received so many blankets that they even had enough to donate some to the 9th Day Animal Shelter.

Some of the donations came from the Sector 7 Community Policing Forum, the 1st Eagles Scout group, Maria’s Angels Foundation and the Mulbarton Community Forum as well as AfriForum among many others.

But Sharday van den Berg from the organisation explained that although a lot of clothes, blankets and food had been received, they were running out of food to hand out to those who need it. They call on the community one more time to please assist with any non-perishable food.

In addition to the flood victims needing help, families who are still suffering from the effects of Covid-19 and the lockdown also need assistance.

But food and clothes are just the basic necessities and soon children will be going back to school.

We are in need of stationery and sanitary wear. With schools reopening later this month, there is a large need that we just cannot ignore,” their Facebook page read.
