Last November a man was arrested by Kagiso Police and later convicted and sentenced to prison for stealing one slab of chocolate from a grocery store.
Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police spokesperson explained that, “At about 11.30am on 20 November 2020, the security guard was on duty inside the shop when he received a tip-off about a man who had hidden a chocolate slab in his waist. The accused was monitored from a distance. He reached the till but failed to pay for the chocolate. He only paid for the other groceries.
When the security guard asked to conduct a body search on him, he ran back into the shop. In the process the stolen chocolate fell from his trousers.”
The man was reportedly held by the store security and later handed over to Kagiso Police.
“On 2 December the accused appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court on charges of shoplifting. He was found guilty, convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm,” Captain Sibiya said.
Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander added, “There are no lesser crimes before the law; crime is crime and will always be crime”.
