Police warn of latest burglary trends

The police have said that they will continue to warn residents of new trends and scams used by criminals to target their community. Here is some of the latest info.

The Kagiso Police are concerned about the increased number of home burglaries being reported from areas such as Tshepisong, Extension 12, Rietvallei and other nearby areas on a daily basis.

“What is even more concerning is the manner in which some of the burglaries are committed, with victims indirectly involved,” explained Kagiso Police spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya.

He said that these victims were indirectly involved by either being negligent or not taking the situation in their community seriously enough.

Victims alleged that they locked their doors and closed their windows properly before going to sleep, but in the process they left their keys hanging in the keyhole behind their door,” Sibiya said.

He said in some instances the windows near doors are closed, but not properly because the handle can’t close tightly enough.

“Criminals take advantage of windows in such a condition and apply their tricks to get them open,” Sibiya added.

After opening the window far enough for their hand to fit through they reach in and take the keys from behind the door. The house is then entered effortlessly, and the family and their belongings put at risk.

The Kagiso Police urged the community to be extra vigilant and not leave their keys hanging behind the door.

Another concern is home improvements and the police suggest that when homeowners fit the more modern aluminium window frames that they upgrade their burglar proofing as well. Sibiya explained that they have seen homes with these frames being targeted increasingly.

The security of our residents is of vital importance to us. We will constantly advise them on any new trends and scams to rob them of their belongings, and urge them to consider police advice and tip-offs seriously before they become victims,” said Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander.
