Two men arrested for false reporting

Kagiso Police report that two security guards were arrested in December for falsely reporting a robbery near Azaadville.

Two suspects aged 23 and 27 were taken into custody for falsely reporting a crime to police. Captain Solomon Sibiya, the Kagiso Police spokesperson said the incident occurred on the last Sunday of December.

“At about 11pm on Sunday, 27 December 2020, two men who were on duty as security guards at a company near Azaadville intentionally made the police believe that they were robbed by unknown men at gunpoint.”

The two men claimed that the ‘attackers’ bound their hands, took a cellphone and two flashlights from them and loaded a 48 metres long electric cable onto a blue Ford Ranger.

Police launched an intelligence-driven and intensified investigation which led to the two ‘victims’ being exposed. They have been detained and are facing charges of perjury, meaning that they intentionally lied to the police,” explained Captain Sibiya.

“Lying under oath is a crime as that leads to wasteful expenditure of state resources and time. Anyone who thinks they can put on a brave face and lie to the police must think twice. There will be no mercy for anyone undermining our ability as police. We have always warned people to refrain from such [behaviour]. We hope to arrest more people involving themselves in false reporting,” said Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander.
