‘We will not tolerate non-compliance with Covid-19 regulations’, police warn

At least 14 people were arrested for non-compliance while a further 22 were arrested for drunk driving. Police warn that they will not tolerate this behaviour.

The Kagiso Police have arrested 14 people in two days for not complying with Covid-19 regulations.

“Police will continue to arrest those defying instructions by the President to wear masks in public; stop any form of gathering; not transport, sell and/ or distribute liquor; or drive under the influence of alcohol,” warned Captain Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso Police spokesperson.

On 9 and 10 January, people were arrested for violating the Disaster Management Act regulations and failing to confine to their own residences during curfew.

The police also registered an additional 22 cases of people driving under the influence of alcohol.

This is a clear indication that more people out there are not taking Covid-19 regulations as seriously as they should. It’s unlikely that the driver who is under the influence of alcohol will always be alone in the vehicle. That means everyone in that vehicle is an accomplice to the driver who has violated more than three Covid-19 restrictions,” explained Sibiya.

He said that every occupant in the vehicle most likely is not wearing a mask and might be spreading the virus amongst themselves.

“We wish to warn members of the public that drunken driving charges can cost them their future careers, especially if committed during this trying period.”

The police are urging residents to respect the law, and to cooperate and comply with the Covid-19 regulations to save lives.

“Fail to do that, and police won’t negotiate but arrest,” cautioned Brigadier Themba Maduna, the Kagiso Police station commander.
