Before diving into the new school year and preparing for all their learners’ return, Krugersdorp High School (KHS) said goodbye to three of their long-time educators who retired.
With about 30 years’ experience each and having formed an integral part to the school structure, their absence will be felt.
Elsa Minnaar never knew the words ‘quit’ or ‘taking it slow’. Each morning she woke up and readied herself for a day of teaching. Throughout the just over 30 years of teaching Biology (later called Life Sciences), Elsa strived to do more than just educate, she wished to touch each child’s life.
It was evident that her belief was that educating children goes far beyond the classroom. Many of her learners would remember the tours to Mpumalanga and the day excursions that she organised,” said Lauren Jooste-Coetsee, KHS Marketing Director.
“She spent many afternoons, weekends and holidays next to the netball courts. This well-known icon in the school community mentored many young women both in the classroom and on the netball court.”

Tiekie van Rensburg carried with her an immense passion for exceeding expectations in both the classroom and the culture department, where countless learners developed a love for performing under her guidance.
For many years, she worked alongside Mr Martin Sasman to produce the senior musical, and later took over the reins when he retired. Mrs Van Rensburg’s passion and creativity were highlighted by the phenomenal showcases that she put on at KHS.
“During these occasions she played an integral part in developing the talent of young men and women on the stage. The opportunities she provided to learners created many lifelong memories and friendships,” Lauren said.
Wendy Dean made the move from Townview High School to KHS to lend her expertise and fine touch to the accounting department and ensure the learners knew what proper balance was, be it on the bottom line of a journal or in their personal lives. She was always there to help.

“The children who had the privilege to be taught by her will always remember her calm, wise and fair demeanour,” Lauren said.
Mrs Dean was involved in multiple facets at the school and would quietly go about ensuring that tasks were carried out smoothly and in a manner of excellence. Her colleagues and learners have always admired Mrs Dean’s work ethic and compassion. There is no doubt that she has given more of her fair share to changing the lives of hundreds of young men and women.”
