Curro Krugersdorp Independent Schools addressed the problem of how to allow their learners to compete again on a national level.
School athletics generally come in two forms. Right now, schools are allowed to host inter-house competitions where their students are allowed to compete against each other, but no spectators are allowed on the field or in the stands. This isn’t a bad compromise as, at the very least, learners have the chance to get active again and take on their friends on the field or in the sandpit.

But, something very special falls by the wayside when athletes are unable to test their mettle against the best of the best from other schools in the province or the country. The spirit when two schools clash is immeasurable and, as Covid-19 regulations stand, this seems unlikely to happen.

The independent nature of Curro schools and their connectedness allowed them to attempt something new. From mid-February to mid-March, Curro Krugersdorp’s pre-school and high school have their learners take to the field to set times in the various track and field events. These times are logged and later sent to a central Curro sports department.

While all learners have the opportunity to compete if they wish to, only the two best results in each event are submitted to the national competition and results will be released by 19 March. Top three athletes in each event will receive a gold, silver or bronze pins.
