A failed hijacking attempt led to the arrest of a man in Chamdor recently.
Captain Solomon Sibiya, the spokesperson for the Kagiso Police explained that on 11 March at 9am two armed thugs tried to hijack a vehicle at the gate of a company in Chamdor. One of them was apprehended by the security guards and handed over to the police.
“The complainant and his female colleague had just parked a company vehicle at the gate, ready to fill in the security entrance forms when suddenly two assailants, both armed with firearms appeared and started running toward their vehicle,” explained Sibiya.
One of them tried to take the woman’s phone on the passenger side while the other one tried to take the car keys from the ignition.
“Realising they were under attack, the complainant’s colleague pulled into the company’s premises.”
One of the would-be hijackers allegedly fell to the ground with his firearm, which his accomplice managed to pick up before fleeing on foot.
“Having his firearm taken by his accomplice, the man tried to flee but the security guards apprehended him.”
Luckily no shots were fired during the incident. The suspect also had a black school bag containing a car jammer in his possession, which criminals use to block a remote control from locking a vehicle.
The suspect was later handed over to Kagiso Police. A case of attempted hijacking was registered and the suspect was formally charged. His accomplice, however, is still on the run with two firearms.
“We believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate hijacking and stealing cars in the area, therefore any related information or tip-offs from the public will benefit not only police but many people,” said Colonel Peter Mabuso, the acting Kagiso Police station commander.
