Warning after spate of hijackings in West Rand District

'Many are still falling victim to hijackers on major national roads on the West Rand, despite numerous warnings by police regarding the matter'.

Police warn motorists to be vigilant as the West Rand District is faced with a high rate of hijackings.

Sergeant Audrey Sefara, Westonaria Police spokesperson stated that road users need to be alert specifically when driving on the R28 between Randfontein and Westonaria, as well as the N12 between Bekkersdal, Westonaria and Fochville on the far West Rand.

Many are still falling victim to hijackers on major national roads on the West Rand, despite numerous warnings by police regarding the matter,” said Sefara.

She added that different types of vehicles including courier company and foreign vehicles are being hijacked.

“Different modus operandi are used to target victims, for example criminals choose secluded areas where victims would find it difficult to escape; ‘hitchhikers’ ask for lifts; vehicles are used to force people off the road and then they are followed to remote areas; and hijackers using blue lights pose as police or traffic officers.”

The police gave the following safety tips that motorists and residents should follow:

• Keep a safe following distance while driving so you can have control in case of an emergency.
• Stay off your phone and check for suspicious people moving around, especially at traffic lights and stop signs.
• Keep your motor vehicle doors locked and make sure your windows are closed.
• Trust your instincts.
• Be observant.
• Carefully observe the physical characteristics of the hijackers and the vehicles they use to commit a crime.
• Use routes that other motorists use frequently.
• Don’t stop when someone is flashing their lights at you. Drive to the nearest police station instead.
• Don’t stop in secluded areas.
• If you hear any noise outside your house at night, don’t go outside. Contact your police station and ask for assistance instead.
• Always activate your alarm at home if you have one.

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police Commissioner urged the community to work with the police and assist them with any information that might help them.
