Two Azaadville schools closed amid Covid-19 fears

Two public schools in Azaadville had been closed for two days after what the WRDCA called a Covid-19 super-spreader event.

Two schools in Azaadville had been closed for two days following the recommendation of the West Rand District Council Area.

A statement from Boitumelo Langa from the West Rand District Council Area (WRDCA) said that the WRDCA had recommended the closure after Azaadville had seen an increase in Covid-19 cases after the Eid celebrations, which the statement claimed was a super-spreader event.

“To date the district has 76 confirmed cases reported through the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD),” read the statement, but added that the WRDCA executives engaged with the Azaadville Covid-19 committee, which indicated that the numbers were higher than reported by the NICD.

“According to available statistics the confirmed cases are at 200. It should be noted that the numbers are increasing on a daily basis.”

The statement said that contact tracing and management have commenced but to alleviate further transmission the WRDCA recommended the closure of the Ahmed Timol Secondary School and the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Primary School from 20 to 28 May.

The News have confirmed with the WRDCA that it had been decided to close the schools only for two days, namely Thursday, 20 May and Friday, 21 May.

A Facebook post on the Azaadville info and Updates group also posted a message saying that the Azaadville Covid facility is up and running at the Misjad/ Madressah Hall, and will be open to all patients who have tested positive or are showing symptoms of Covid-19.

Steve Mabona, GDE media liaison officer confirmed that due to the number of cases reported in the area, the Department of Health advised that the two schools be closed temporarily.

“We decided to heed the call and close the schools. We will monitor the situation accordingly.”
