KHS supports the fight against cancer

KHS leaders recently raised money in support of the fight against cancer.

Schooling is about far more than just opening a book and studying its contents.

Learner development takes on many forms of which teaching them about compassion for those outside of the school may be among the most important.

Krugersdorp High School (KHS) strives to do just that, implementing multiple charitable events for their learners to participate in during the year.

As part of their student leaders’ responsibilities, they’re asked to regularly hold a fundraiser and support a charitable cause for their community outreach portfolio.

After being appointed as student body representatives, the leaders were divided into different groups. Recently, one of the groups consisting of five matric leaders asked their fellow learners to donate R10 and to wear informal clothes with a coloured shirt corresponding to a type of cancer for the day.

“We wanted to build up KHS’ name by giving to the community and to be more involved,” said head girl Jordyn Ehmke who explained that they knew two learners who had cancer and wanted to raise funds and donate it to the Childhood Cancer Foundation (Choc).

They raised R8 880 in one day, which the school then donated to Choc.

Currently, the team is planning a shoe, clothes and blanket drive for those in need during the winter, which they hope to hand out to the community by the start of July.
