The Krugersdorp Police have appealed to residents to play their part to rid the community of a thorn in everyone’s side – theft out of their vehicles. They shared some valuable tips.
• Avoid parking your vehicle where there are no security officers guarding other vehicles
• Make sure that all the doors and windows are properly locked after you have parked your vehicle
• Valuable items like a laptop and camera should be locked in the boot of your vehicle
• Be aware of people telling you that you have a flat tyre; the intention can be to steal items that they see inside the vehicle or hijack your vehicle
• Do not open your windows for hawkers along the road and at the traffic lights
• Keep the doors locked and windows closed at all times
• Do not use a cellphone unless you have a hands-free kit
• At night, park in well-lit areas
• Always lock the doors and close the windows when getting out of the vehicle
• Remove detachable radios and the radio’s face when getting out of the vehicle
• Have your keys ready in your hand as you approach your vehicle, especially if they are difficult to find in your handbag
• If your vehicle is bumped from behind and you do not feel comfortable with the individual involved in the situation, drive to the nearest police station for help
• Do not give strangers a lift
Krugersdorp Police station commander, Brigadier Mashao further encouraged the community to work hand in hand with the police and also join their local Community Policing Forum (CPF) or neighbourhood watch.
He also warned second-hand goods dealers like pawnshops as well as the community to refrain from buying stolen property, as it is a punishable offence.
