Police ask community not to perform rituals in remote areas

The police have been noting with concern an increase in attacks on people who perform their cultural rituals in remote areas.

Kagiso Police have noted with concern that many people have been ambushed while performing cleansing rituals in remote areas.

Kagiso Police spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya said as much as they respect all different cultures and beliefs as stipulated in the country’s Constitution, they are concerned about numerous complaints about victims being ambushed and robbed whilst performing cleansing rituals at isolated public spaces next to river streams.

“We also have to prioritise the safety of any citizen who performs rituals that are part of their cultural beliefs,” Sibiya said.

He added that one of the open and bushy spots where more than one complaint have been reported is in the west of Kagiso – an area between Azaadville and Extension 4 adjacent to the Kagiso gravesite.

Sibiya said criminals have seen an opportunity to launch their attack on unsuspecting participants. Therefore the Kagiso Police are appealing to members of the public not to be vulnerable and refrain from performing their rituals in such remote and risky areas.
