Many arrested for driving under the influence, transporting alcohol – some of them cops

Seventeen people were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, and six others for contravention of the lockdown regulations and transporting alcohol during a Okae Molao operation in Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift this past weekend.

The police took to the streets of Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift recently to clamp down on criminals and ensure that level 4 lockdown regulations were enforced.

The operation took place on Saturday, July 3 From 18:00 until 02:30 the following day (Sunday, July 4) and was led by the Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Tommy Mthombeni; the Gauteng MEC Faith Mazibuko; and West Rand District Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana.

The operation started with roadblocks on the corner of Paardekraal Drive and Luipaard Street, and the N14 and R28 in Muldersdrift.

Provincial Police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela said during these roadblocks, 17 people were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, and six others were arrested for contravention of the lockdown regulations and transporting alcohol.

West Rand District Police spokesperson, Captain Raymond Sebonyane said at one of the roadblocks, two police officers were arrested in terms of the level 4 lockdown regulations for transporting liquor.

The entourage then proceeded to a popular illegal mining site in Krugersdorp and Munsieville to enforce Covid-19 adjusted level 4 lockdown regulations. Stops-and-searches were conducted, and police arrested those drinking in public during curfew,” Makhubela said.

Sebonyane said 92 suspects were arrested during these operations for among others, failing to confine to a place of residence; being undocumented; murder; assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm; common assault under domestic violence; pointing a firearm; business burglary; common robbery; and possession of drugs.

The recent Operation Okae Molao started with roadblocks.

During the operations they also confiscated 2.250l of liquor, R1 000 cash and a speaker system.

According to Sebonyane and Makhubela, Kekana and Mthombeni thanked all the members and other law-enforcement agencies for their dedication and commitment to ensuring the communities are safe and encouraging them to adhere to Covid-19 protocols.

“Members of the public are also encouraged to adhere to the Disaster Management Act regulations (Covid-19 protocols), and to report crime or suspicious activities by contacting their nearest police station or by calling the police Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or use the SMS number on 32211. Information may also be conveyed to the police on the My SAPS App that can be downloaded on any smartphone and remain anonymous,” said Sebonyane.
