Curro kids write their way to the top

Curro Krugersdorp's Grade Rs to 3s competed in a national writing competition this year, receiving high marks and placing in top positions by the end.

Creative writing is a way for the soul to reach out, to express with beautiful prose what the lips sometimes fail to do. Those who try their hand at writing very rarely lose their love for prose.

Curro Krugersdorp Primary sets out to stoke that passion for words at a very tender age, recently providing their Grade R, 1, 2 and 3 groups a way into the writing world.

To create an outlet for the tons of creativity each younger learner holds inside, the school participated in the very first national Curro Foundational Phase Writing Competition, challenging their learners to forge a creative piece of work of their own in class, which were to be submitted by the end of May for assessment.

To adapt to each age group’s current skill levels, Grade Rs were asked to create a drawing, painting or collage of their favourite story as told by their teacher. Grade 1s had to make a booklet with illustrations and at minimum one sentence per page. Grade 2s made illustration with a minimum of eight sentences on the phrase ‘I am a good friend, because…’. Grade 3s created a first-person perspective story of at least 12 sentences with accompanying illustrations on the life cycle of any animal.

By August, the results were in. Among 22 Curro schools and 450 participating learners, Curro Krugersdorp’s Hymne Nel became a finalist in the Grade 1 group, Leon Arangies placed third in the Grade 2 group and Imke Nel ended in first place in the Grade 3 group.
