Votes are in: Mogale City’s new mayor and speaker elected

Councillor inauguration and voting for key municipal political positions started at 10:00 on Tuesday, November 23.

The Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) council convened at Centenary Hall on Tuesday, November 23 to inaugurate its newly elected ward and proportional representative (PR) councillors, and to vote on other important municipal political positions.

Voting for Speaker of Council started at about 12:00 and by 12:50 Councillor Zillah Maguire posted on the DA Mogale City Facebook group, “Congratulations DA Mogale! Voting concluded. DA Alderman Jacqui Pannall: 44; ANC Francis Makgato: 33,” which means that out of the 77 ward and PR councillors (seats) in the municipality, 57% of the votes went to the DA’s Jacqueline Pannall, and 42.86% went to former Mayor, Councillor Francis Makgato.

At 13:25 Zillah noted that voting for the Executive Mayor of the Mogale City Local Municipality had started. By 14:00 it was announced that the DA’s Tyrone Gray has taken the position with 45 of the 77 total votes. The ANC’s Lucky Sele received 31 votes and there was one spoilt ballot.
