LETTER: Mind over matter

Many people that speak to me have become frustrated with prayer. It is as if God does not listen and in the end he does what he wants – Pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Humans are a complex chemistry. Just small, almost insignificant changes can make a big difference both physically and emotionally.

Getting a bit older is definitely a challenge. Not only does your body change but your mind also undergoes changes. That is why mind over matter really matters. If I think negative thoughts all the time, being critical, pessimistic, negative in my thoughts, it does have a negative influence on my physical health. I feel tired, my motivation to do things decreases. It is almost as if my mind is poisoning my body. But when I am around positive, enthusiastic people, my chemistry is affected. It has an impact on my mind and on my body.

Ok, you don’t get much out of praying. Many people who speak to me have become frustrated with prayer. It is as if God does not listen and in the end he does what he wants.

But an aspect of prayer that I found to have helped my chemistry is meditation. Not talking to God, not complaining, not asking for favours. Just being quiet.

In a quiet place by myself for short intervals has had a positive impact on my well-being. If you are struggling today, chemistry may be your answer. It may not be mind over matter or the power of positive thinking.

Silence, solitude is God’s way of resetting our default button.
