LETTER: Survival of the fittest

'Surviving is all about breathing. If you are not coping, not surviving, here is a trick from God’s book. Breathe.'

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

It was Darwin who coined the phrase, ‘Survival of the fittest’. Agree with him or not, it is a fact that the species that is strong and able to adapt will probably survive.

Will you survive? With the unique challenges we face in the 21st century, many people are in survival mode. Cannot wait for the weekend, holiday and the lucky few, retirement.

I recently heard of two survival tricks. Knowing when to hold your breath, and knowing when to take a big, deep breath. When God created us, He created us to overcome and to survive with very little. Gen. 2:7, “And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being”.

Surviving is all about breathing. If you are not coping, not surviving, here is a trick from God’s book. Breathe. Fill your lungs with air, hold it for a moment and exhale.

But if required, hold your breath, God is on the way.

When someone dies, we say he drew his last breath. Until that moment, appreciate God’s miracle – breathing.

Struggling, maybe you must just catch your breath. Amen.
