The West Rand District Police arrested ninety-six suspects on and around the West Rand during an Operation Okae Molao on Thursday March 24.
According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson of the West Rand District Police, offenders were arrested for the following crimes:
• One for murder
• One for attempted murder
• One for armed robbery
• Two for assault with intend to do grievous bodily harm
• 21 for common assault
• One for pointing a firearm
• 12 for theft and robbery
• 12 for malicious damage to property
• Five for dealing in drugs
• One for possession of dangerous weapons
• One for possession of drugs
• Two for driving under the influence
• One for fraud
• Three for trading liquor without a licence
• Two for contravention of protection orders
Traffic fines to the value of R85 100 were issued, and minor offences such as contempt of court, intimidation and undocumented persons were also dealt with,” Lefakane said.
She said the aim of the operation was an effort to restore law and order on the West Rand, and make sure members of the community feel safe.
Brigadier Happy Xaba, the acting West Rand District Police Commissioner emphasised that violent crimes involving firearms were on the rise, and police were on a mission to root out all those carrying unlicensed firearms.
“No one is exempt from the operation at roadblocks; every vehicle must be checked to determine if it was stolen, or if it is transporting illegal drugs or unlicensed firearms, and then searched for possible suspected stolen property. Those found to be breaking the law will be dealt with harshly,” Xaba said.
Lefakane said one person was caught with dagga hidden inside the bonnet of his vehicle.
Xaba thanked and appreciated the efforts and dedication displayed by members when conducting their duties.
“We are approaching the Easter holidays when our roads will be busy. Let us help to minimise road fatalities by increasing our visibility through blue light patrols,” Xaba said.
