Hijacker caught after taxi driver fought back

After realising that he had been wounded he ran into the hospital premises where he saw police and stopped them.

A brave taxi driver and vigilant police work recently saw to it that a man landed behind bars for hijacking.

Kagiso Police spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya said in a statement that the Kagiso Police swiftly responded to a complaint of a minibus taxi hijacking at a filling station next to Leratong Hospital over the weekend.

The victim had just arrived at the Adcock Street Total garage at about 03:15 to park his taxi. While still sitting in his taxi, two unknown thugs appeared and opened both the driver’s door and the front left passenger door.”

The one on the left of the vehicle was armed with a knife and used this to threaten the driver while they demanded cash. The driver stepped out of the vehicle and took on the thugs, but during the struggle he was stabbed in the left arm.

After realising that he had been wounded he ran to the nearby taxi rank to seek help. Unfortunately he could not find anyone and ran into the hospital premises where he saw a police vehicle leaving, and he stopped them.

The victim informed the police of the incident, and they responded swiftly and chased the thugs.”

After noticing that they were being chased the passenger jumped out of the hijacked taxi and fled. His accomplice drove into the Leratong Taxi Rank where he was cornered and arrested.

The police opened a case of hijacking and are trying to establish if the suspect had been involved in any other violent crimes. He was remanded in custody on May 4 after appearing in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court in order for the investigation to continue.
