Why mothers make great estate agents

Real estate company shares the top reasons why mothers can often make such great real estate agents.

It is no wonder society has dedicated a whole day to celebrate our mothers. Equipped with all the necessary patience, kindness, and empathy to manage a household, mothers deserve every minute of special treatment.

But, raising a family while juggling a career can be incredibly demanding, especially considering that very few jobs offer the flexibility that most parents need.

“In real estate, you get to manage your own hours and create a schedule that works around you and your family,” said Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa.

This is just one possible reason why real estate might be a good match for mothers who need flexible working hours. But, there are other aspects of motherhood that could help equip mothers to become successful within the real estate industry.

Below, RE/MAX of Southern Africa shared the top reasons why mothers often make such great real estate agents:

1. Managing everyone’s schedules: Mothers need to be flexible enough to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules, from soccer practice to extra lessons and everything in between – which is why so many mothers make such great real estate agents. Real estate agents need to accommodate their clients when they can only view houses after hours, scheduling with the current occupants to make it convenient for everyone, while simultaneously replying to all their emails and still being available to clients.

2. Offering emotional support: When children have had a tough day at school, mothers are there to listen, provide advice, and share comforting words the way only a mother can. In real estate, it is also important to develop an emotional connection with your clients; after all, real estate agents are there to help clients through some of their biggest life decisions, like buying or selling a home. Creating trust between clients is the best way of ensuring that a deal runs smoothly.

3. Adapting as the situation changes: Things almost never go as planned, especially when you are raising young children. Mothers learn to be adaptive to adjust to whatever life throws at them. For example, you might only be informed about a project the night before it’s due and will have to drive to the nearest open store to buy the required supplies. Similarly, when a seller cancels a viewing minutes before the buyer is set to arrive, good real estate agents might quickly be able to think on their feet and arrange a viewing at another property nearby, or will work out an alternative solution that works for both clients. This amazing skill to adapt to whatever is thrown at you is what can separate the good from the great.

4. Multitasking masters: Multitasking is a must-have skill for parents and real estate agents. Having the ability to focus on several things at once is a critical asset for both roles. As a mother, getting your kids up and out the door in time for school is a daily juggling act, from preparing breakfast and making lunches, to getting them dressed while also dressing yourself. Similarly, as a real estate agent, you might be juggling last-minute lender demands, an expedited closing schedule, and client requests at the same time – and doing so for multiple deals and clients. Having the practice of multitasking at home can help agents manage the chaos of multiple transactions on a daily basis.
