Jogger targeted in morning run in Dan Pienaarville: Thug shot and killed

While jogging a man noticed a Golf pulling to the side of Van Riebeeck Road. Three people jumped out and he had to defend himself.

An alleged assailant was shot and killed by a jogger on a morning run in Dan Pienaarville on Monday, May 30.

According to Dowry Security High-risk Tracking and K9 Unit (HRT) manager Marcel Jonker, the incident occurred just before 06:00 on the corner of Robert Broom Drive and Van Riebeeck Road in Dan Pienaarville.

“We received a distress call on a community WhatsApp group reading ‘Need police and ambulance urgently. One suspect down. One still hiding’.”

Police and Public Safety arrived shortly after the shooting. Pictured is a forensic pathology service vehicle. Photo submitted.

Jonker said at the scene a man gave the Dowry HR team members his account of the events.

He told us that while he was jogging he noticed a VW Golf of unknown colour slowing down and pulling to the side of Van Riebeeck Road. Three people jumped out and started chasing him. When one of them pulled a firearm on him, he also drew his firearm and shot the would-be robber. Another thug armed with a rifle ran to the Golf while another one hid in the bushes.”

The Dowry officers found the thug that was hiding and detained him on the spot. Police and Public Safety arrived shortly afterwards.

The News contacted Krugersdorp Police spokesperson Captain Raymond Sebonyane who said police were aware of the incident, and that they would provide a full statement soon.

This is a developing story.
