Security guards held hostage, assaulted during Kagiso Cemetery robbery

The municipality confirmed that four security officers who were on duty at the Kagiso Cemetery were held up and taken hostage by an unconfirmed number of assailants.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has confirmed an incident that took place on June 23 at Kagiso Cemetery where four security guards were taken hostage, assaulted and robbed.

Additional allegations that female guards were sexually assaulted have not been confirmed due to the investigation being ongoing.

According to a statement released by William Nchefu of the MCLM Department of Public Safety on June 24, “On the night of June 23 at around 20:30, four security officers who were on duty at the Kagiso Cemetery were held up and taken hostage by an unconfirmed number of assailants. The officers on duty were assaulted and robbed of their possessions. Other items on site were also stolen. The incident was immediately reported to the local police station which responded to the call. After a statement was taken on-site, a case of robbery and assault was opened.

The alleged sexual assault has not been confirmed as an investigation is currently underway and pending feedback where a full report on the incident will be provided by the local Kagiso police.”

When asked about the identity of the security company, Nchefu’s only response was, “The security company is contracted to the municipality to provide security services at various municipal sites where guarding and related security services are required”.
