Assault over bad joke leads to a two-year prison sentence

When a bad joke did not go down well, two men from Pango Camp assaulted and stabbed a man.

Charles Abott from Pango Camp in Munsieville was sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Captain Raymond Sebonyane, spokesperson for the Krugersdorp SAPS said the sentence was handed down on Friday, July 1. This came after the 31-year-old Abott and 21-year-old Winston Douglas Kruger, both residents of Pango Camp were arrested for the assault on 37-year-old Conrad Stevan Myburg.

He explained that on Monday, May 9 Myburg was fixing electric cables when Abott and Winston walked past.

Mr Myburg’s mother made a joke that they wanted to steal cables.”

Abott and Winston then assaulted Myburg, and Abott stabbed him in his left hand and elbow with a knife.

An case was opened and after the men were arrested the docket was given to detective Warrant Officer Tsholofelo Malotwane to be investigated further. The charges against Kruger were withdrawn by the court, and Abott was handed down two years direct imprisonment.

Sebonyane said the Krugersdorp police station commander, Brigadier Happy Xaba applauded Malotwane for a job well done. He added that they continue to encourage the community to report suspicious activities to their nearest police station, or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111, use the My SAPS app, or send an SMS to 32211.
