Kagiso Mall not under attack: It was just a robbery – Gauteng Police

Gauteng Police caution social media users about fake messages following cell phone store robbery in Kagiso Mall.

Gauteng Police are concerned about messages being circulated on social media which say that the Kagiso Mall is under attack by Basotho nationals.

A statement from Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said that they would like to put the videos and messages into perspective.

“Those videos and messages are not true, and misleading to community members.”

Sello said what happened was that four thugs wearing balaclavas robbed a Pep Cell shop in the Kagiso Mall. The incident happened on Tuesday, July 12 at about 11:30 and one of the thugs had a firearm.

They got away with cell phones worth approximately R50 000 and an undisclosed amount of cash. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.”

The public were cautioned to refrain from circulating these messages as Sello said they were causing unnecessary panic.

“The public is urged to use social media in a responsible manner and not spread unconfirmed information.”

They ask that anyone with information that can assist with the investigation of this case to report it to the Crime Stop Line on 08600 10111 via the My SAPS app.
