Man sentenced to 20 years for robbery

Man was found with firearm, stolen items and an axe.

A 30-year-old-male, Bongane Mtabane from Soweto, was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The Krugersdorp Regional Court also declared him unfit to ever again possess a firearm.

Last year on February 7 at about 04:00 the victim, 25-year-old Oupa Mokheti, and a friend were walking in Sivewright Street in Krugersdorp on their way to Kagiso. They were accosted by two unknown men who threatened them with a firearm and an axe. The assailants took the victims’ two cellphones. The victims saw a patrolling police vehicle and alerted the officers to the robbery. The thugs ran in different directions and Sergeant Sakhile Dlokweni and Warrant Officer Lesedi Moiloa managed to apprehend one of them. They searched him and the two cell phones, a firearm, one magazine, and the axe were found on him.

A case of armed robbery was opened and the suspect was detained in police custody. The case was investigated by detective Sergeant Andrew Maswanganyi who secured a solid conviction for the state.

The Krugersdorp Police Station commander , Brigadier Happy Xaba applauded the officers involved following the sentencing of the accused.
