Two days were set aside in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court today (July 27) for the trial of 52-year-old Oupa Chembe who faces charges of assault and damage to property.
The trial will take place on October 11 and 18.
This came after the case had been postponed twice recently due to the fact that the defence never received crucial evidence, that of CCTV footage of the incident, from the investigating officer. But on July 27 the prosecution, led by State Prosecutor Advocate Jannah Downes, made sure a copy of the footage was handed to Chembe’s defence.
Chembe stands accused of allegedly assaulting Zander Oosthuizen, who was a schoolboy at the time of the incident, and damaging his vehicle outside Key West Shopping Mall in August 2021.
AfriForum’s Private Prosecution Unit also became involved in the case due to suspicion that there were irregularities with the Krugersdorp police’s handling of the matter. They are acting in accordance with a watching brief on behalf of Oosthuizen.
