On September 19, the team went to Laerskool Millennium after the school helped collect donations for the team to help with their expenses.

According to Millies’ departmental head, Mindie Koekemoer, some of the school’s assistant teachers competed against Team N’zuri with various challenges. The News attended the day, with the challenges including running with and dragging fire hoses, carrying and dragging a tyre, and shooting at a target with a fire hose.

All the school’s learners spectated from the pavilion with Mindie describing the atmosphere as follows.

Learners were really excited and curious to find out more about how the fire department works.

“They were thrilled to see the assistant teachers participate and were motivated by them from the pavilion,” she said.

She said the highlight of the day was when learners asked the firefighters questions.

“The firefighters used their fire hoses to spray learners with water on the pavilion and at the end of the demonstration. The learners loved this, especially in the hot weather we were having,” she added.

“The firefighters won. This proves that you have to be super fit to be a firefighter,” said teacher and organiser of this initiative at the school, Christa Coertzen.

Coach of Team N’zuri, Manie Gouws, said they do this every year, and they also give a fire safety lesson for the learners.

He concluded that the highlight for him was the learner’s enthusiasm for the fire truck.
