Cheers to the holidays: Festive drinks to try this season
Celebrate the jolly season with the right drink in hand! Explore the West Rand’s favourite picks for camping trips, pool days, rainy afternoons and New Year’s parties.
In South Africa, the festive season brings sunshine instead of snow – perfect weather for relaxing outdoors with friends, family and your favourite summer drink. But which drinks best suit each occasion?
Here are a few local favourites to keep your spirits bright this holiday season:
• Around the campfire:
Many residents enjoy a camping holiday, where the oomies light a fire and sit around it in their camping chairs until the late hours of the night. The perfect drink for such an occasion is definitely a Brannas and Coke (don’t forget the ice) or an ice-cold beer.
• Around the pool:
Lounging around the pool in December is, for many, a typical part of the holiday season. One of the first drinks that comes to mind is a cocktail. A simple classic is the mojito, which only needs four ingredients, namely white rum, lime juice, mint leaves and soda water. Another easy favourite is a crisp gin and tonic or dry lemon.
• Rainy days:
Summer in Gauteng often brings a few rainy or chilly days. The perfect drink for such moments is Amarula and coffee. First, mix the liqueur with hot chocolate powder until you have a creamy texture, then add your freshly brewed coffee.
• Christmas dinner:
When sitting down for dinner with the family, a dark red wine, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinotage, pairs perfectly with a festive feast. These full-bodied wines complement red meats like beef and lamb beautifully.
• New Year’s Eve:
For those ringing in the new year with friends, one tradition never seems to change – shots, many shots!
