Shots fired and car chase after Munsieville store robbery

Three men with ages ranging between 30 and 34 stormed into a Munsieville retail store on Saturday, September 17 at 16:35.

Two men will be appearing in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court after they allegedly assisted in robbing a store in Munsieville and were caught after a car chase.

In a statement Captain Raymond Sebonyane from the Krugersdorp police said three men with ages ranging between 30 and 34 stormed into the retail store on Saturday, September 17 at 16:35.

Inside the store the men instructed a worker to keep quiet and lean against a wall.

The victim told police she saw one of the men showing something to a cashier at the Money Market till before taking money from the till. While another thug was taking cigarettes he instructed the woman to accompany him to the cash office. On their way there one of the thugs whistled to alert the others to leave and they fled the scene.

The landlord’s son saw the getaway vehicle and followed it. While driving behind it he saw a police vehicle and alerted the members.”

The police vehicle made a quick U-turn and chased the vehicle.

“The officer requested backup, and at the traffic lights on the M13 (new road), the officer saw Mogale City Public Safety traffic officers and requested them to stop the vehicle, which they did.”

One of the suspects fired shots at the officer who returned fire before the suspected robbers fled into the bushes.

“Johannesburg Highway Patrol also provided back-up, leading to the arrest of the two suspects.”

Two firearms and ammunition were found in the suspects’ possession. One of the firearms had a magazine and seven live rounds of ammunition which was licensed to one of the suspects. Another firearm, a revolver flywheel .38 special was found to be unlicensed.

Police also found an undisclosed amount of cash, different brands of cigarettes which included nine boxes of Dunhill, 10 boxes of Stuyvesant and four boxes of Pall Mall. Two cell phones, an I-phone, a Huawei and two wallets containing cards were also recovered.

Both suspects were arrested and detained in the police cells.

Krugersdorp Police Station commander Brigadier Xaba applauded the members for a job well done and for ensuring that the perpetrators were brought to book.
