Police concerned about numerous child rape incidents

The rape of two minors in Kagiso has become a huge concern for police.

Police are strongly appealing to parents, saying they must prioritise the well-being of their children.

Kagiso Police Station Commander Brigadier Nyelisani Mabatha expressed major concerns about parents risking the lives of innocent children, saying ‘a parent’s ignorance and negligence contributed to cases of rape’.

This comes after a 10-year-old child was raped by her mother’s boyfriend at Reservoir Ridge at about 21:00 on February 23.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya, the rape occurred while the mother was working night shift.

“The victim informed the police that it was not the first time the 33-year-old suspect forced himself on her.”

In another incident in Swaneville on February 25, a nine-year-old girl was raped by her cousin.

Both men have since been arrested and detained at the Kagiso Police Station. They are yet to appear in court.

“We are warning any negligent parent that each reported case will be investigated thoroughly including the circumstances that led to the commission of such crime to determine if there was any negligence by the parent. Anyone who will be found to have been negligent will be charged accordingly,” Mabatha warned.
