Padel mania hits Krugersdorp

Padel is a sport that is growing in the community – here's why ...

According to Matt Caldera, owner of Padel Farm, padel is becoming one of the fastest-growing sports.

“The reason is that there is a social and community aspect to it,” he said.

Matt says that since 2020, around 240 padel courts have opened in South Africa. He describes padel as tennis and squash had a baby in sport, where the rules are similar to tennis, but you can play the ball off the wall, like squash.

He added that the fun nature of the game is great for forming a community and that you do not need to be a pro to play it.

Aiden Smith and Tristan Bontekoning play padel.

“The game has a huge social aspect because you can play with your family, friends, and strangers and have a great time. This is because the sport is not as intense, where you can play it at your own pace, socialise and make a day of it, similar to golf,” Matt adds.

An avid padel player, Reese Shelver said the sport is great fun with his friends. He also enjoys a drink afterwards where they can reconnect.

“Padel is far less intimidating than tennis or squash. The enclosed area allows for easier rallies making it more fun. It’s good exercise without you having to go into the red zone. Socially, we normally have a beer and a chat afterwards,” concluded Conroy King, a player who only started playing last August.
