Suspects remain at large following Lewisham shooting

Lewisham residents urged to stay vigilant following a shooting on Tuesday, April 2.

Residents of Lewisham experienced a tense morning following a shooting.

According to resident Nikita Volschenk, gunshots were heard yesterday morning, April 2, from about 09:30 and the shooting followed an alleged robbery.

Mogale City councillor Lourens Gouws confirmed to the Krugersdorp News that the police’s Operational Response Services ground team did make it to the scene to assist in catching the perpetrators, however, no arrests have been made as they fled in a getaway vehicle.

“A ground team arrived on the scene to assist local police as they were chasing suspects involved in an alleged robbery in Lewisham. Additional backup was called and more police units and private security soon arrived on the scene. A call was made for the Gauteng Traffic Police’s helicopter to assist which arrived about 12 minutes later. The search extended into Kagiso and a K9 unit was also requested and deployed to investigate,” Gouws said.

The News approached West Rand District Police’s spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya to comment; he confirmed no arrests have been made as yet.

“We are investigating the matter,” Sibiya said.
