Operation Shanela: Two liquor outlets closed down

Bulletproof vests, a police uniform, roulette machines, drugs and more were confiscated during a recent Operation Shanela held on the West Rand.

The Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, West Rand District officials and CPFs joined police during Operation Shanela, focussing on drug tracing and visiting taverns in and around the Carletonville, Khutsong and Krugersdorp policing precincts.

According to Gauteng Police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello, multiple arrests were made for various drug-related crimes and substance abuse. She further expressed concern that criminals impersonate law enforcement after a police uniform was found at a scene.

The officials made other arrests for charges including:

• Contravention of the Immigration Act
• Drunken driving
• Possession of drugs
• Dealing in liquor without a license
• Possession of stolen property
• Illegal possession of a police uniform
• Possession of ammunition
• Possession of an Illegal gambling machine
• Rape, assaults GBV, fraud, theft and intimidation

”We confiscated blood kits, Nyope, a syringe containing a substance suspected to be drugs, liquor with a total volume of 91 220ml, a steel spike with a ball, Chinese roulette machines, a 9mm round, police bulletproof vests, police uniform, cellphones, black safe, hand radios and a speed point among other things. Furthermore, two liquor outlets were closed as a result.”
