102 busted in illegal mining sting

A police operation was held in West Village, Krugersdorp, resulting in the arrest of more than 100 illegal mining suspects.

Gauteng police conducted a successful intelligence-driven operation, Vala Umgodi, at Shaft 9, better known as the Mogale Crusher mine in West Village, recently.

According to acting Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, the operation resulted in the arrest of 102 suspects involved in illegal mining, contravention of the Immigration Act, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“The operation yielded significant outcomes, including the disruption of illegal mining activities and the confiscation of pendukas, steel balls, firearms, and ammunition. The suspects will appear before the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court soon,” Sibeko said.

Residents are urged to report and contact the police and play a role in ensuring public safety.
