Illegal mining operation leads to 11 arrests

Police arrested 11 suspects during a joint operation for either illegal mining or violations of the Immigration Act.

Eleven suspects were arrested during a joint illegal mining operation in the Hekpoort and Magaliesburg precincts recently.

According to Gauteng Department of Community Safety spokesperson Ofentse Morwane, two suspects were charged with illegal mining and nine with contravening the Immigration Act.

Various illegal mining equipment was confiscated during the operation. The crackdown was a result of Operation Vala Umgodi, as the initiative aimed at combating illegal mining and associated crimes across the country.”

Members of the police, the police’s Visible Police Unit (Vispol), the Flying Squad and the Gauteng Traffic Wardens were involved.

Various arrests were made following the operation.
