Vehicle stolen in Kagiso among cars recovered in syndicate crackdown

An intelligence-led operation in Midrand resulted in the recovery of stolen vehicles – including one from Kagiso – and uncovered a suspected vehicle theft syndicate.

A team of law enforcement officers recovered four high-performance vehicles, one of which was stolen in Kagiso, during an intelligence-driven operation carried out in Midrand last week. All vehicles were reported as either hijacked or stolen.

According to the Gauteng Provincial Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the team also recovered a significant amount of equipment and tools used for motor vehicle theft, including a signal jamming device. One suspect was arrested, and a search is ongoing for additional suspects who may be part of the syndicate.

Masondo explained that members from Crime Intelligence received information about a syndicate involved in stealing high-performance vehicles across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.

A team comprising SAPS Counter-Intelligence Headquarters, SAPS Gauteng Highway Patrol Flexi2, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, Cap Specialised Operations and Tracker Connect was mobilised and pursued the suspects in Midrand.

“One of the suspects was seen driving a Toyota C-HR, fitted with false registration plates, and was intercepted. It was confirmed that the vehicle was reported stolen in Kagiso on July 29. Multiple items were found inside the car, including a jamming device and a computer box,” Masondo stated.

He continued the team proceeded to a residential complex in Midrand, where tools used for vehicle theft and three additional vehicles, reported stolen in Johannesburg and Tshwane, were recovered.

“The arrested suspect is expected to appear in a local magistrate’s court in due course, facing charges including theft of a motor vehicle and car hijacking,” Masondo concluded.
