West Rand sees 134 arrests in major Gauteng operations

During high-density operations and Operation Shanela, law enforcement arrested 134 suspects on the West Rand, contributing to a total of over 498 arrests across Gauteng.

Law enforcement agencies successfully arrested more than 498 suspects during high-density operations and Operation Shanela, which took place from August 15 to 17, across all five regions in Gauteng, including the West Rand.

According to Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP) spokesperson, Sello Maremane, 134 suspects were arrested in Mohlakeng, Westonaria, Fochville, Carletonville and Kagiso, among other areas targeted in the West Rand District Municipality.

“Fifty-nine of those emanated from Operation Shanela and 29 from Operation Basadi. Suspects were arrested for cases which include possession of substances suspected to be drugs, contravention of the immigration act, driving under the influence of alcohol and assault GBH, among others. A total of 1 217 people and 282 vehicles were searched in the municipality,” Sello said.

In the City of Johannesburg, 63 suspects were arrested for cases which include possession of drugs, possession of an unlicensed firearm, attempted murder and contravention of the immigration act.

Over 900 people and 239 vehicles were searched, and one vehicle was recovered during this operation.
“Police targeted Lenasia South, Eldorado Park, Kliptown, Moroka and Jabulani,” Sello confirmed.

“The GTP commends the law enforcement officials for their efforts in making these arrests. Notably, more than 122 suspects were arrested for contravention of the immigration act across the province. Officials will continue to intensify crime prevention efforts to ensure safer communities,” Sello added.

Those involved in the operations include the GTP, Gauteng Traffic Wardens and the police.
