Police swooped on shops across Carletonville, Krugersdorp and Randfontein, uncovering counterfeit goods worth nearly R3m.

The Gauteng Police’s Counterfeit Unit, in collaboration with brand protectors, Gauteng Wardens and border police, conducted two operations on the West Rand and Johannesburg Districts, seizing counterfeit goods worth over R2.9m.

Cellphone accessories were among the counterfeit items seized by police.

According to the police’s provincial spokesperson, Mavela Mosondo, on August 28, the unit visited various shops in Carletonville, Krugersdorp and Randfontein, seizing 3 072 counterfeit items, including:

• Counterfeit cellphone accessories
• Counterfeit toys and consumables
• Counterfeit clothing

”The operation demonstrates the Gauteng Police’s Counterfeit Unit’s ongoing efforts to combat intellectual property infringement and protect consumers and businesses from counterfeit goods,” Masondo said.
