‘Illegal miner’ caught with AK-47s and gold

A suspected illegal miner was arrested in Magaliesburg with AK-47s, loaded magazines, and 15 tons of gold-bearing material.

Police and private security teams carried out a swift, co-ordinated operation that led to the arrest of a suspected illegal miner in Magaliesburg on Wednesday, October 15.

The operation took place during ongoing illegal mining activity.

According to Gauteng Provincial Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the suspect was found in possession of two AK-47 rifles, two magazines loaded with 48 rounds and 15 tons of gold-bearing material.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court.
