Krugersdorp, Randfontein targeted in weekend crime crackdown: 186 arrested

Operation Shanela swoops on the West Rand, netting 186 suspects in Krugersdorp and Randfontein during a weekend crime crackdown.

Krugersdorp and Randfontein were among the key areas targeted during Gauteng’s large-scale law enforcement initiative, Operation Shanela, which took place over the weekend.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng responsible for Crime Detection, and also acting as Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Mbuso Khumalo, led law enforcement agencies as they apprehended 770 suspects who had been evading arrest.

According to Khumalo, these suspects were wanted for serious and violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery, rape and sexual assault.

The operation was conducted across all five districts in Gauteng from October 10 to October 12. In the West Rand District, which includes Krugersdorp and Randfontein, 186 wanted suspects were arrested.

An additional 265 suspects were arrested during roadblocks, stop-and-search operations and compliance checks at liquor outlets across the province.

All arrested suspects will appear in various magistrates’ courts in Gauteng in due course.
