Four Krugersdorp officers in court over extortion claims

An IPID investigation led to charges after officers allegedly demanded cash from a licensed dagga user, raising concerns about misconduct and accountability within local law enforcement.

Four officers from the Krugersdorp Flying Squad appeared in the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court on charges of extortion following a recent incident.

According to a spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Lizzy Suping, on September 11, the officers visited a complainant’s home allegedly to search for dagga, claiming it was part of an operation. They reportedly found a bucket of the substance, but the complainant produced a certificate authorising his possession.

“They allegedly threatened to arrest him if he did not give them money, even after he showed them the certificate. The officers allegedly extorted R4 000 from him, but he later opened a case at a police station,” Suping said.

She added that IPID investigated the matter and referred it to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who decided the officers should face extortion charges.

The four officers appeared in court and were granted bail of R2 000 each. The case has been postponed to November 10 for further consultation.
