Operation Shanela nets 35 arrests in Kagiso illegal mining crackdown

Police arrested 35 suspects and seized drugs, liquor and mining equipment during an Operation Shanela crackdown in Kagiso.

Krugersdorp police, together with other West Rand District departments, conducted another Operation Shanela in Kagiso on Thursday, November 6, targeting illegal mining in the area.

Led by Acting West Rand District Commissioner Major General Lorraine Challen, the operation aimed to enhance safety and enforce the law.

According to Challen, 35 suspects were arrested for various offences, including contravention of the Immigration Act, dealing in liquor without a valid licence, possession of drugs, possession of stolen property, and illegal gambling.

“The team also seized several phendukas to disrupt and dismantle illegal mining operations. In addition, three unlicensed liquor outlets were closed, and crystal meth and mandrax tablets were confiscated,” she said.

Through Operation Shanela, the SAPS in Gauteng aims to demonstrate its commitment to promoting safety, maximising police visibility, and upholding the authority of the state.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant, particularly during the festive season, when crime levels typically increase.
