West Rand crime syndicate hit: Two arrested, one wounded

Months of teamwork between security and police units paid off with the arrest of two suspected syndicate members after a shootout.

Two members of a notorious criminal syndicate targeting businesses in the West Rand were arrested on Tuesday, November 18.

According to Help24 CEO Sheldon Grobler, the group had been targeting convenience stores in Roodepoort and Krugersdorp for months.

“An intensive intelligence operation was conducted by studying the group’s movements and the vehicles they use in these crimes. A multidisciplinary team consisting of Help24 Secure, SAPS West Rand K9 Unit, Tracker SA and Fidelity led to the successful arrest of these individuals,” Grobler said.

He added that operational members managed to track the suspects as they travelled through Florida. It was confirmed that the vehicle they were driving was fitted with false number plates, indicating they were preparing to commit another robbery.

Law enforcement acted immediately and attempted to stop the vehicle, resulting in a shootout between the suspects and the operational members. One suspect managed to escape, but two were arrested, with one wounded during the exchange of gunfire.
