Police seize two illegal firearms and ammo on West Rand

Police strike hard on West Rand: At least two unlicensed firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition seized.

Police recovered three unlicensed firearms and ammunition during operations across Johannesburg, including the West Rand, from December 4–7.

According to provincial police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello, over 360 suspects were arrested for various crimes during these crime-combating interventions. The operations included Operation Shanela, Safer Festive Season, High Density, Station and Vispol Commander’s Operation.

During the operation held in Roodepoort, Krugersdorp and other parts of the West Rand, police also recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition that had been abandoned at illegal mining sites in the area.

A rifle was confiscated during the operation.

Other items recovered include:

• one shotgun
• 11 shotgun rubber rounds
• four unknown calibre rounds with blue points
• two unknown calibre rounds
• one rifle magazine
• one 9mm magazine
• 15 9mm rounds
• one silver pair of handcuffs
• one brown side bag
• one green side bag

Outside the West Rand, police and partners arrested around 100 suspects in areas including Eldorado Park, Jabulani, Sandringham and Norwood for crimes such as firearms possession, hijacking, drug and liquor offences, theft and property damage. Detectives also apprehended about 172 more suspects for various contact, property and serious crimes.
